Tai chi faq

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese art that has been practised down through the centuries. It is known for its slow, deliberate movements and focuses on breath control and balance. It has gained widespread recognition as a gentle, effective form of exercise to help you to restore harmony in mind and body.  It helps to improve your balance, flexibility and strength and is good for stress relief. It can be practised by all age levels. This low impact practice nurtures inner calm and enhances the energy within you. For health and spiritual growth Tai chi is a path to physical vitality and mental focus and clarity.

I have assisted people who have had various conditions and illnesses who have benefited from attending regular Tai chi exercise classes. The gentle movements practiced on a regular basis are a great way to restore your vital energy. The slow movements make you more mindful of your breath and assist you in recovering your core strength. This gives you more zest and enthusiasm for life.

In the one-to-one sessions I offer Tai chi and Chi kung practice. From my background in Guidance and Counselling I can also assist with people who wish to change direction in their lives or to move forward in a new direction. I do Ling chi treatments which you will find more details of, in the next section.

Ling refers to the natural essence within us.  A Ling chi treatment will take you towards a lighter more harmonious state of being. Your energy will flow more freely and your body and spirit will feel more alive. The benefits of a treatment are:

Reduced stress, anxiety and fatigue. Relief from physical tension and discomfort. A renewed sense of peace and purpose. A return to balance and wellness. This treatment uses gentle touch, mindful breathwork and the chi energy to clear stagnant energy from the body. This will help to release emotional blockages and activate the body’s innate flow of energy. The treatment will often feel deeply calming. The sessions are for one hour.

Tai chi can be practised by all age groups. As it enhances balance, flexibility and muscle strength it is good for older adults to reduce the risk of falls. Its low impact nature makes if accessible for all ages and all levels of fitness. The meditative flow of the movements promote relaxation and this fosters emotional wellbeing and resilience. It harmonises your physical and mental health.

Tai chi combines slow, flowing movements with mindfulness and deep breathing. Key principles include the following:

Relaxation: Keep muscles loose, avoiding tension

Posture: Maintain and upright spine, shoulders relaxed, knees slightly bent

Flow: movement transition is smooth like water flowing

Breathing: Deep breathing from the diaphragm

Focus: Attention to the movement and the breath

Our Infinite Tai chi is a mixture of Yang and Chen styles

Chi kung is a holistic practice focused on cultivating and harmonising the body’s vital energy(chi). This is done through gentle movements and breathwork. Chi kung emphasises simplicity and repetition often incorporating static postures or dynamic exercises to enhance energy flow. Chi kung helps to reduce stress and support healing. Chi kung exercises have specific health goals such as boosting immunity, calming the mind and revitalising the body. It is easy to learn and adapt to people with different physical needs.

How can I help you

My experience as a teacher and energy practitioner

I qualified as a Tai Chi teacher in 2003. I spent a number of years since then as an assistant of Jason Chan, a Daoist Master of Tai Chi who was my teacher on the Infinite Tai chi teacher training course.

I have given classes and workshops for over twenty years with the ETB Community Education service, the Irish Arthritis Foundation, and the Irish wheelchair association and groups in the HSE. I have given workshops in schools both Primary and Secondary for wellbeing days. Facilitating Tai chi classes ‘as Gaeilge’ for parents wishing to improve their proficiency in Irish has been a delight for me. My teaching and learning of the Tai chi form are ongoing and I continue to deepen into the practice with Jason’s training courses to this day.
